1907-08: Baker's men's basketball team,

1956: William Scarborough is appointed pres-

William Howard Taft at Baker in 1911

ident. Several significant updates to Baker's
campus occur during his tenure, including the
building of a student union and a new library.

1911: William Howard Taft becomes the first
U.S. president to visit Baker while in office.
1922: Joab Mulvane of Topeka donates, at
that time, the largest single monetary gift in
Baker's history-$100,000-for construction of
a new science building.
1925: Former Baker president William Alfred

Quayle passes away. His rare bible collection is
bequeathed to Baker.

1933-34: Baker celebrates its 75th birthday

with a Diamond Jubilee that included five days
of festivities and a speech given by Governor
Alf Landon.

Baker Union

1959: The new
Baker Union opens
for student use.
Amenities include
a lounge, a snack
bar, bowling alley,
games, and a bookstore.

1969: Mungano, Baker's first organization
for African-American students, is founded by
professor Dr. Jesse Milan.
1975: Baker begins its first master's degree
program.

1938: A 1,200-seat stadium is finished and

named for Emil Liston, longtime Baker coach
and founder of the National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics.

1940: A Peabody,
Kansas, banker
named Orlando Jolliffe donates $42,000
to build a new men's
dormitory. Jolliffe
Hall is completed in
just three months
with help from student laborers.

1976: The
night before
freshmen movein day, a fire
at the Kappa
Sigma fraternity
house killed four
students and
one alumnus.

1987: Baker President Daniel Lambert starts
the bagpipe tradition.

1988: Baker adds the School of Professional
and Graduate Studies.

1989: The Harter union underwent renovations and endowed Harter Scholarship was
established.
1991: Baker
adds the School
of Nursing.
1995: The
Osborne Chapel
comes to Baker
The Osborne Chapel
brick by brick
from Sproxton,
England. Lady Margaret Thatcher, whose
father preached in the chapel, dedicated the
reconstructed building in October 1996.
2006: Dr. Patricia Long becomes the first
female president of Baker University.
Baker adds the School of Education.

2012: Ross and Christine Hartley donate $1.6
million toward science building renovation.
2016: In
March, the
women's
basketball
team played
in the championship, falling
Wildcats at Daytona
to MidAmerica
Nazarene en route to a school-record 28-9
record. In December, the football team sets
numerous records during its run to the title
game in Daytona Beach, Florida, falling to St.
Francis and ending with a 14-1 record.
2017: Marty
Mather donates
$3.4 million, the
largest gift in
university history.

1943: Taylor Hall burns to the ground.
1948: Taylor Hall, entirely rebuilt, is rededi-

cated as Memorial Hall in honor of the Baker
students who died during World War II.

1986: The football team makes it to the NAIA

Dr. Lynne Murray

championship game and is defeated by Linfield
College. Mike McCarthy, '87, future Super Bowl
champion coach of the Green Bay Packers, is
on the team.
