Longtime university
supporter named
board chair
For Skip Kalb, '73, Baker University has always been about the
lifelong relationships formed from
being a part of a thriving campus
community.
Raised in Baldwin City in the
1950s and 1960s, Kalb was well aware
of Baker, located in the heart of his
hometown. After graduating from
Baldwin High School in 1969, he
knew he would be staying close to
home for college. Kalb will be returning home more often. On July 1, he
officially began his term as the chair
of the Board of Trustees after serving
more than a decade on the board of
his alma mater.
"The motivation to serve as board
chair was, in large part, because
of my love for the university, and
I wanted to pay it back because of
what Baker has meant to me and my
family," said Kalb, ready to continue
Baker's emphasis on student experience, innovative programs, and
financial sustainability and growth.
A first-generation college student, Kalb was a pre-med student,
majoring in biology with a minor in
chemistry at Baker before attending the biochemistry program at
the University of Kansas. After two
classes at KU, he altered his career
path, enrolling in KU's MBA program
before beginning a successful career
in strategic leadership.
The new path resulted in Kalb's
41-year career at one of North America's leading freight transportation
companies: BNSF Railway Company,
formed by the merger of the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe. His early
efforts on intermodal strategies for
industrial development are considered the seminal work in what is
now considered the nation's widely
accepted intermodal hub colocation
real estate development strategy.

Before his retirement
in 2016, Kalb served
as the project lead
for several of BNSF's
strategic, rail-centric
multimodal transportation development
projects, including the
