Buehler story continued from page 16.

bers his relationships with the students. He took
tremendous pride watching apprehensive freshmen
transform into confident musicians, not afraid to
perform a solo, by the time they graduated.
"Students involved in Baker choir were working
with me four days a week," he recalled. "I got to see
them day after day, and in many cases year after
year, watching them mature and grow. It's one of
the greatest joys a person can have."
Another joy: seeing his graduates pursue a career in music education, sharing their vocal talents
with the next generation.
"I am thrilled to see a number of students I
taught who are so much more successful teachers
than I ever was," Buehler said. "It's a wonderful
experience to watch that develop and see their relationships with their current students. It's sort of like
being a grandparent."
Since retiring from Baker in 2009, the Buehlers
have lived in Cannon Beach, Oregon, along the
northern coast. They live close to their son, T.J.
Buehler, '93, and his family. John and Susan, who
celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year,
continue to share their love of music as members of
the Cannon Beach Chorus in a community of 1,700
residents that is known for its 30 art galleries. John
directs the chorus while Susan serves as the pianist.
Susan teaches voice and piano lessons.
To ensure the next generation of music educators from Baker receive financial assistance, the
Buehlers generously established the John and
Susan Buehler Endowed Award in Choral Music
Education.
Mike Yunghans, '02, benefited from Buehler's
generosity inside and outside the classroom.
Two months into his first semester at Baker in
the fall of 1998, Yunghans, who hadn't declared a
major but had shown an interest in music, experienced a ruptured appendix. He was in the hospital
for weeks. John Buehler made the 90-minute drive
to the hospital, sitting at Yunghans' bedside. The
music professor encouraged and guided Yunghans
through that first semester to complete his course
work.
"For whatever reason, it just didn't register in
my mind that he would come all that way to just
check up on an undeclared, budding music student," Yunghans recalled. "Once I realized that was
his intent, it just stuck with me forever. It meant a
great deal."
