Engineering Internships in Public Policy
The Washington Internships for Students of Engineering
(WISE) Program is an educational opportunity for
engineering undergraduates to learn about and explore
the issues related to science and technology public
(S&T) policymaking. Third-year or fourth-year students
and new graduates are selected through a national
competitive process for a paid summer in Washington,
D.C. The program includes mentoring activities on issues
of engineering and public policy, interactive meetings
with leaders in federal government and public policy
organizations, and student research on an engineeringrelated public policy issue. A collaborative effort among
several sponsoring engineering societies, WISE has
operated since 1980. Students participate each year
with sponsorships from the Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers- USA (IEEE-USA), SAE International,
ASHRAE, ASTM International, American Nuclear Society,
American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and American
Ceramic Society.
The objectives of the WISE program are to teach
students how S&T public policy decisions are made,
to show students how engineers can contribute to
legislative and regulatory decisions, and to guide
students on an independent research project related to
their sponsoring society. The 9-week schedule includes
private visits with staff from congressional committees,
administrators in executive agencies, reporters of the
Washington press, members of lobbying organizations
(including engineering groups), and other public policy
leaders. Each student produces an independent public

policy paper on an issue of their own choosing, which
is published in the online Journal of Engineering and
Public Policy and orally presented to the sponsoring
societies at the end of the program. Information on the

due December 31, 2017 for the 2018 summer.
