Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections September 2016 - 11

Society Reports audience with words, graphs and figures, and data validation with basic statistics. Stay tuned as this idea molds into a final product! Awards were presented to the Museum für Naturkunde and the Botanischer Garten und Botanisches Museum during the Annual Business meeting in Berlin in June. Again, I would like to thank the Associate Editors of Collection Forum for their extra-ordinary efforts (Matt Brown, Yemisi Dare, Alana Gishlick, Janet Waddington); Liath Appleton, Lori Schlenker and Katie McComas for their fantastic work on SPNHC Connection; Lynn Jones for her careful book review editorship; and last but not least, Mari Roberts for recreating a beautiful Leaflet format! Please note the email addresses for the various publications: Collection Forum editor@spnhc.org SPNHC Connection newsletter@spnhc.org Leaflets mroberts@nybg.org Respectfully submitted, Christine Johnson, Chair Recognition and Grants Committee The Recognition and Grants Committee is charged with promoting and reviewing the various awards that the Society can confer in recognition of a member's service, as well as the Faber Research Grant. This year the committee received two nominations for the Carolyn L. Rose Award and one for the Special Service Award. The committee's recommendations for the two awards were presented to Council where they received unanimous approval: In recognition of his extensive work on Integrated Pest Management and his contribution to the field and its members through workshops and publication, the Council of the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections voted to present the 2016 Carolyn L. Rose Award to David Pinniger, OBE. David was unfortunately unable to accept the award in person but sent through a short video which was shown at the Annual Business Meeting in Berlin. In recognition of the hard work undertaken during the planning and execution of the 2016 Annual Meeting in Berlin, together with their efforts to foster closer ties between SPNHC and the Global Genome Biodiversity Network (GGBN), the Council of the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections voted to present a Special Service Award to the Local Organizing Committee of the 2016 Annual Meeting. This year a new award, the Vendor Recognition Award, was instituted. The award is intended to recognize long-term support of the Society and/or the Society's annual meetings by commercial organizations. Please see elsewhere in this newsletter for a call for nominations for this and our other awards. Respectfully submitted, Andrew Bentley, Chair Web Committee This summer the Web Committee submitted its plan to revamp the current website (http://www.spnhc.org/). The plan calls for a change in web host as well as a new CMS using WordPress. This new site should save money and will result in a more dynamically functioning site and membership database. We will begin the new design process over the next few months and hope to move forward with the new site early next year. Respectfully submitted, Liath Appleton and Ann Molineux, Co-chairs Sessional Committees International Relations During a very successful and enjoyable conference in Berlin the International Relations Committee met to discuss relevant business. This meeting was surprisingly and unusually poorly attended. This prompted a discussion as to whether this sessional committee had fulfilled its remit. This was later discussed at council and it was felt that the committee had achieved a great deal, the group was still relevant to the Society, and council would review and update its goals. We also discussed the invitation to host the 2018 SPNHC meeting from Dunedin, New Zealand.
