Since its founding in 1900, Denver Museum of Nature &
Science (DMNS) has grown into one of the largest natural history museums in the western United States and has
educated more than 80 million visitors. DMNS preserves
and provides access to its collections in its new state-of-theart Avenir Collections Center. The Museum is committed to
reducing its carbon footprint, and the new wing housing the
Center has received LEED Platinum certification by the U.S.
Green Building Council, the highest rating possible for new
construction, and is designed to use 50 percent less energy
than a standard building of its type. Committed to both
environmental and institutional sustainability, the new wing
housing the Avenir Collections Center was completed without
incurring any debt. Together, the Museum's collections in
anthropology, archaeology, geology, health sciences, paleontology, and zoology, and its library and archives, provide the
foundation for understanding the natural and cultural history
of the region. Of the Museum's 1,800 volunteers, 600 of them
work alongside research and collections staff. Last year, the
Museum attracted over 1.72 million visitors, making it one
of the top ten visited museums in the country. Visit DMNS at
www.dmns.org.
Travel to Denver is convenient via the Denver International
Airport (DIA). A recently constructed A Line Commuter Rail
will take you from DIA to Union Station in downtown Denver. A free 16th Street Pedestrian Mall shuttle will take you
within two blocks of The Curtis.
Why Come to Denver, Colorado?
Conveniently located, Denver is the gateway to both the
Rocky Mountains and the eastern plains. It has a great deal to
offer those who wish to explore its vibrant cultural community as well as those who are interested in more remote areas
of Colorado on an extended stay. To learn more about travel
in Denver and across Colorado, please see Visit Denver at
www.denver.org.
Green inside and out, Denver Botanic Gardens began in 1951
and is considered one of the top botanical gardens in the
United States and a pioneer in water conservation. Accredited
by the American Alliance of Museums, the Gardens' living collections encompass specimens from the tropics to the
tundra, showcasing a plant palette chosen to thrive in Colorado's semi-arid climate. The Gardens' herbaria document
vascular plant and fungal biodiversity and species distribution in Colorado and the Southern Rocky Mountain Region.
The Gardens is a dynamic, 24-acre urban oasis in the heart of
the city, offering unforgettable opportunities to flourish with
unique garden experiences for the whole family - as well as
world-class education and plant conservation research programs. Additional sites extend this experience throughout the
Front Range: Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms is a
750-acre native plant refuge with an active farm in Jefferson
County; Mount Goliath is a high-altitude trail and interpretive
site on the Mount Evans Scenic Byway. Visit the Gardens at
www.botanicgardens.org.
The Denver metro area is a great supporter of its scientific
and cultural institutions and together, the Denver Museum of
Nature & Science and Denver Botanic Gardens benefit from
the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) tax of
1/10th of 1%. This equates to approximately 25% of the annual operating revenue for both institutions.
