Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections September 2016 - 8

Society Reports requirements and harmonization of US and EU regulations (guided by Rusty Russell and Richard Rabeler, with input from Yilmaz Balci [APHIS], Robert Naczi and Andrea Weeks) Colorado, which will be open only to Emerging Professionals. Details for the luncheon will be announced in the spring. SPNHC t-shirts are available for sale at www.teespring.com/ spnhc-apparel. This is an ongoing campaign that renews every seven days, and shirts are continuously available (even if it says, "Available until Thursday!" you can buy a shirt afterwards, because it's a rolling campaign). You can purchase shirts directly from the website and they will be shipped to you. This convenience does make the shirts a little more expensive, but the Emerging Professionals make about $1 from every sale, which goes to support our annual luncheon. Shirts, hoodies, long-sleeved tees, and stickers are available all with Erica Krimmel's winning design from our t-shirt competition last year. The EPC is now holding quarterly meetings to keep up with things in between SPNHC meetings. Our last quarterly meeting was in August 2016, and our next one will be in December 2016 or January 2017. We will post more information on the Cracking the Collections blog and our Facebook page when that meeting is scheduled. Anyone interested in helping with or joining the EPC is welcome to attend. We are seeking new authors for Cracking the Collections! If you are interested in writing a blog post, please visit https:// crackingthecollections.wordpress.com/guest-post-submissions/ or contact Katie McComas. * NAGOYA PROTOCOL and ABS - identify collections issues that may arise after implementation of the Nagoya Protocol and national and international ABS regulations; explore if CETAF Best Practices and Code of Conduct would be suited for voluntary adaption of SPNHC members; develop model contracts, harmonized usage of material transfer agreements, usage of use statements, etc. (Greg Watkins-Colwell, Breda Zimkus, Lori Schlenker, and Carol Butler, with input from Kate Davis) * FIRE CODES - outline fire codes as they relate to alcohol collections (Paul Morris, Rob Waller, with John Simmons and Andy Bentley) * HUMAN REMAINS - identify and compile specific legal references addressing transfer and ownership of human remains (Brian Spatola) A full list of our current liaisons can be found on the SPNHC website at http://www.spnhc.org/6/committees#epg. If you are interested in serving as a liaison to a committee that is vacant, please contact Kari Harris. Our goal is for each of these subcommittees to either get into contact with regulators to address issues and/or to compile information on their topic, and then draft a summary for the SPNHC Wiki. Respectfully submitted, Kari Harris, Chair In the future, we hope to develop subcommittees to address other topics relating to CITES, IATA/ICAO, MTAs, individual national import and export laws, the CDC, US CBP, US BLM, US FWS, US Geological Survey, and US NPS. If anyone is interested in researching legislation and regulations relating to these agencies/organizations/topics, please contact Dirk at dirk.neumann@zsm.mwn.de or Stephanie at scarson@amnh.org. Legislation and Regulations Committee The committee's meeting in Berlin was a success, with 16 SPNHC members attending. During the meeting, the new committee structure was outlined, and then the group discussed issues surrounding the Nagoya Protocol and Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS). We are pleased to report that since the Berlin meeting 45 people have expressed an interest in participating in Legs & Regs activities: 37 as committee members and an additional eight who would advise specific subcommittees. Our committee members have expanded upon or introduced some interesting topics. The four topics that the committee will initially address include: * APHIS - clarify phytosanitary and veterinary import 8 * SPNHC Connection We hope that the activities of the Legs & Regs Committee lead to announcements of a few webinars soon, so stay tuned. Respectfully Submitted, Dirk Neumann and Stephanie Carson, Co-chairs Long Range Planning Committee Because SPNHC is now in the fifth year of its current strategic plan, the main focus of this meeting was to review the progress that has been made toward that plan and discuss how to track and record this progress and revision of the strategic http://www.teespring.com/spnhc-apparel http://www.teespring.com/spnhc-apparel https://crackingthecollections.wordpress.com/guest-post-submissions/ https://crackingthecollections.wordpress.com/guest-post-submissions/ https://crackingthecollections.wordpress.com/guest-post-submissions/ http://www.spnhc.org/6/committees#epg
