Society Reports
plan. The consensus of the committee
was to maintain the excellent tracking
document in the format that Linda Ford
designed and to think of the strategic
plan as more of a living document that
can be revised as needed, rather than
embarking on a new strategic planning
exercise. This was the last meeting of
the Long Range Planning Committee chaired by Linda Ford; after this meeting Barbara Thiers
assumed the leadership of this committee. Attending the committee were Laura Abraczinskas, Lori Benson, Bryan Brunet,
Linda Ford, Travis Marsico, Ann Molineux, Deborah Paul,
Suzanne Ryder, Jeff Stephenson and Barbara Thiers.

Membership Committee
The Membership Committee focuses on
ways to promote the Society and retain
existing, and attract new, members.
We promote SPNHC at conferences
by advertising in conference literature
and exhibiting the Membership Booth.
Please contact Tiffany Adrain (tiffanyadrain@uiowa.edu) if you would like
materials to distribute or display at any
conferences you attend. You may be eligible for complimentary registration. Thank you to SPNHC members Kari Harris
and Deb Lewis for exhibiting the booth at the Botany 2016
conference. The next booth display will be at the Geological
Society of America Meeting in Denver in September 2016.
Thank you, also, to Ann Pinzl for writing Member Profiles
for the SPNHC Connection newsletter. Please contact Ann
(apinzl@sbcglobal.net) to nominate yourself or a fellow
SPNHC member for a profile feature. The Committee would
be happy to hear from anyone with connections in future
SPNHC Annual Meeting locations who can help us widen the
membership reach of the Society. As always, please encourage your colleagues to join SPNHC and remember to renew
your membership on time!
Respectfully submitted,
Tiffany Adrain, Chair
Professional Development Committee
Committee
The Professional Development Committee met at the SPNHC conference in
Berlin in June and had a very productive meeting. Jennifer Strotman is now
co-chair of the committee along with
Jeff Stephenson. The PDC has defined
five areas of work and some short-term,
mid-term, and long-term projects:
*
Committee structure and tasks
*
Demo Camp
*
Workshops
*
Travel grants
*
Wiki and web
The PDC will have working groups and
subcommittees to head up these projects. Jennifer and Jeff
will take the lead on redrafting the Leadership Manual for
the PDC. We will ask for reviews from all committee members and this will form the first part of our wiki page for the
SPNHC website. The expected deadline for the PCD Leadership Manual is the end of September. An updated committee
roster list will be ready by the beginning of September. Rob
Huxley is assisting on committee structure and tasks.
DemoCamp
The Demo Camp at the 2016 Berlin SPNHC conference
was a success. Jennifer Strotman, who took over the lead for
organizing the Demo Camp shortly before the conference, is
looking for ways to improve the camp and offer more for attendees at next year's conference in Denver.
Mentorship and Travel Grants
The PDC helped to coordinate the SPNHC mentorship
program including this year's four Fitzgerald Travel Grant
awardees and one awardee for the Christine Allen Travel
Grant. We enjoyed working with all of the mentors and mentees and look forward to hearing what they gained from the
conference and the mentorship experience.
Fitzgerald Travel Grant awardees included the following:
*
Suzie Li Wan Po from the Cambridge University Museum of Zoology. Suzie's presentation was "Needle Felting
Fills: Creating Fills for Areas of Fur Loss using Needle
Felting as a Technique." Cathy Hawks served as her mentor.
