Society Reports
Expanding the reach of SPNHC

Inspired by the plenary address to
SPNHC by Dr. Kirk Johnson, Director
of the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian, the SPNHC Council
was asked to consider whether or not
there may be a role for the Society in
Johnson's vision for a "One World Museum." Several attendees suggested that
SPNHC develop more specific goals
related to the advocacy of collections,
especially increasing advocacy for small
and overlooked collections. Attendees
suggested that SPNHC should be prepared to carry on the work of the Biodiversity Collections Network (BCoN)
when the activities funded by that
Research Collaboration Network are
completed. It was suggested that SPNHC plan a more active
role in providing information about different types of collections, either through formal courses (see below) or perhaps a
"dating service" that would put those seeking information in
touch with a SPNHC member expert on the topic at hand.
Make better use of social media and other modern communication methods to support SPNHC member collections and
organizational goals. The suggestions included:
*

Make the SPNHC website more modern and nimble.

*

Expand other social media content (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, Instagram).

*

Introduce new features to the annual meeting programs to
share how-to information about modern communication,
e.g., "reverse mentorships," where new members teach
social media/presentation tips to older ones.

*

Include in the program student or Emerging Professional
-led symposia dealing with communication strategies to
reach a millennial audience.

*

Hold "speed dating" sessions at annual conferences to
give established professionals the chance to ask questions
or get advice from students and emerging professionals
about communicating with a millennial audience.

Educational programs

SPNHC should offer or co-sponsor training courses, either
in-person or online. Perhaps a MOOC model (Massive Open
Online Course) could be a source of income for the Society.
Models for the type of course content and structure may be
found in the EU Collections Competency Course (EUColComp) and also the Entomological Collections Network
10 * SPNHC Connection

(ECN). For short courses with simpler content, YouTube
demos can be created and shared through the SPNHC YouTube channel.

Increase membership

Suggestions for growing the membership of SPNHC included
working more closely with other professional societies, more
co-sponsored symposia, and training courses.

Structural changes to the organization

Create nodes around the world for SPNHC hosted by large
institutions, and embed international relations into all committees.

Increase support for Emerging
Professionals

Enhance scholarships and travel assistance, and encourage
established members to get funding to sponsor symposia or
workshops associated with the annual SPNHC meeting that
build in funding for travel and conference costs.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara M. Thiers and Suzanne Ryder, Co-chairs

Membership Committee
The Membership Committee focuses
on ways to promote the Society, retain
existing members, and attract new
members. We promote SPNHC at conferences by advertising in conference
literature and exhibiting the Membership Booth. Please contact Tiffany
Adrain (tiffany-adrain@uiowa.edu) if
you would like materials to distribute
or display at any conferences you attend. You may be eligible for complimentary registration. The next venue for the
Membership Booth will be the Geological Society of America
meeting in Seattle in October 2017. Thank you to everyone
who has helped with display materials in the past year. Thank
you, also, to Ann Pinzl for writing Member Profiles for the
SPNHC Connection Newsletter. Please contact Ann (apinzl@
sbcglobal.net) to nominate yourself or a fellow SPNHC member for a profile feature. The Committee would be happy to
hear from anyone with connections in future SPNHC Annual
Meeting locations who can help us widen the membership
reach of the Society. In the coming year we will be reviewing
membership categories with a view to introducing a "retired"
membership category. Please contact Tiffany if you have
suggestions or comments on this subject. We will be working with other committees to develop ways to support and
mentor new SPNHC members. As always, please encourage
