included are photos of what is preserved and what is slowly
deteriorating to nothing.
The last two sites are Niakhar in Senegal and Kisumu,
Kenya. Niakhar still receives French support, and research
continues there, though at a reduced level. Kisumu is very
different; it has the shortest history, but it's also the most
active today. Its facilities are a mélange of new and prosperous buildings alongside others that are aging and even
unused, the result of a history of funding heydays followed
by financial droughts. All in all, this book is hardly optimistic about the future of medicine in Africa, yet it is not totally
pessimistic either, in part because the Africans interviewed
and described here are an extraordinary group determined to
better the health of their compatriots. This work is a fascinating tour of a complex and poorly documented subject.
