Profiles
it is a large cryocollection comprised of both biological and
environmental (e.g., soil) samples. We don't house anything
that is considered a select agent, like Ebola, so don't think I
walk around everywhere in a space suit. This is a huge departure from working in a natural history museum, and I am
adjusting ...and am enjoying the change.
What are your responsibilities for them?
I was brought to CDC to help modernize and develop the
biorepository.
Describe some of your activities.
My activities are all over the map. I am retro-accessioning
our 600+ collections securing documentation, assigning
numbers, and capturing as much of the history of the collections as possible. In order to manage all of this new data, I
created an Informatics Working Group to help streamline all
activities associated with our collections data. To accomplish
this task we are updating forms, cleaning data, adding data,
migrating data, updating systems, writing programs, creating
portals, and so much more. I am learning more about how
data is managed than I ever thought possible.
What do you find most interesting about your
work?
The most interesting thing about my work is that it is the
CDC. I will be honest, I wasn't sure what I was getting into
when I accepted this position; leaving natural history collections and my furry little specimens was a very hard decision
to make. However, I am getting to take everything I have
learned and apply it in a completely new way. The bridge
between how a mammal collection and a biorepository is
managed is short.
What accomplishments are you most proud of?
In the short time I have been with CDC, I am most proud
of my involvement with writing our CASPIR management
policy. Writing policy has been an interesting experience and
I have never become so aware of words ...such as "must,"
"should," "may," and "recommend."
What do you find most fulfilling about your work?
I love coming to work every day and realizing that the work I
do has the potential to aid in the future of global health. Our
biorepository holds samples that could play a role in identifying new treatments or discovering some key to an important
health issue.
What have you learned from SPNHC to be particularly helpful? How has SPNHC helped you?
Where do I begin...I have always said that I wouldn't be
where I am today without SPNHC. Of course it's easy to say
that I've learned from the journal, newsletters, meetings, etc.,
but honestly I learned as much (if not more) from the people I

have met over the years. I consider SPNHC family - it is the
most supportive, creative, knowledgeable, and professional
group of individuals I know. All you have to do is ask, and
help is there.
Ann Pinzl served as Curator of Natural History at the Nevada State Museum for many years and started its herbarium
in 1973. She has been a long-time member-supporter of
SPNHC.
