Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections September 2017 - 9

Society Reports
keep the L&R Co-chairs informed, and that subgroups should
do horizon scanning for upcoming issues. The committee
agreed. Andrew Bentley said that the L&R Committee should
define projects and get subgroups involved in this.

*

Agreed-upon subcommittees

Dirk will follow up with Gillian Brown and Shelley
James on the Australian Herbarium incident for L&R
meeting in Otago, NZ, 2018.

*

International Laws and Treaties: addressing Nagoya/CBD /
ABS; Protection of National Heritage.

Review improvements in the L&R meeting in Otago, NZ,
2018.

US National Laws subcommittee

International Specimen Exchange and Transportation:
addressing IATA/ICAO and Dangerous Goods; Phytosanitation and veterinary laws, including USDA/APHIS; Countryspecific import/export regulations; and Standards for data
release and data uploads. It was discussed if this should be
addressed by the Best Practices Committee (BP), but the
L&R committee would prefer to have a BP representative to
keep L&R informed.
US National Laws: addressing USFWS, CBP/ACE, and the
Lacey Act.

What we hope to accomplish
*

Act as an active network, and discuss issues with other
groups such as CETAF, BGCI, and GGBN, where appropriate.

*

Sub-committees to develop mission statements and bullet
point their priorities:
- Deadline for response to Co-chairs: September 8,
2017.
- Distribute to Co-chairs, who will then share with
their committee members and NHCOLL-L.

follow up on USDA/APHIS.

Regarding US Export Control (Export Compliance and Trade
Sanctions, OFAC):
*

Members will identify priorities, particularly related to
US sanctions, embargoes, or anti-boycott regulations applying to Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria.

Regarding CPB/ACE:
*

Members will identify priorities and update the committee on latest developments/progress in implementation.

At the meeting it was noted that the deadline for information
on Digital Sequence Information to the CBD Secretariat is
September 9, 2017. Anissa Lybaert stressed that the science
perspective is not represented enough on this level, so the
committee would like SPNHC to team up with others, such as
CETAF, BGCI, GGBN and TDWG. Dirk will try to moderate
a response.
Finally, we have some news for our listserv members. Because of inactivity, the PERMIT-L listserv has been shut
down. Going forward, permit-related topics may be discussed
on the NHCOLL-L listserv. We look forward to "seeing" you
there and to receiving your questions directly!

New tasks to be addressed by the subcommittees

Respectfully submitted,
Dirk Neumann and Stephanie Carson, Co-chairs

Discuss and decide if the subcommittee gets involved to

The Long Range Planning Committee met on Tuesday, June
20, 2017, in Denver, in connection with the 2017 SPNHC
meeting. There were 13 attendees at the LRP Committee
meeting. The meeting was a free-wheeling discussion about
future directions and activities that SPNHC might explore.
Barbara Thiers prefaced the discussion by saying that the
areas with less tangible progress toward strategic planning
goals fall in to several categories: 1) Regional nodes and
regional meetings - national and international; 2) Updating
and expanding functionality of the website; and, 3) Training
courses for future collections leaders. The discussion that
ensued raised many interesting ideas, as summarized below.
