Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections March 2018 - 5

President Report - Linda S. Ford
Bráz, Belém, Brazil, and a letter responding to the solicitation
of comments by the US Environmental Protection Agency
concerning clean water and wetlands.
On behalf of SPNHC, I provided letters of intent for collaborative support for several grants relevant to natural history
collections. One was an IMLS grant to research best practices
for the treatment of historic taxidermy and, another, an NSF
AISL program (Advancing Informal Science Learning) grant.
The AISL grant included collection-oriented topics and feedback with the goal to examine the role of "authenticity" with
the use of "authentic" objects compared to the increasing
number of digital surrogates in educational effectiveness.
During this organizational year, we have had several replacements and changes in positions within the Society. For
the remainder of the term, Melinda Peters stepped into the
Member-at-Large position vacated by Kelly Tomajko; Randy
Singer replaced Greg Watkins-Colwell as the representative
for the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists (ASIH) at the beginning of 2018; Bethany Palumbo will
maintain the Chair position of the Elections Committee as
Co-chair Kelly Sendall resigned due to retirement. Also special thanks to Rich Rabeler, who graciously agreed to fill in as
needed on the Elections Committee while Bethany Palumbo
is attending to her newborn son. A sincere "Thank you" goes
to Kelly Sendall, Greg Watkins-Colwell and Kelly Tomajko
for their dedicated years of service, and I look forward to
working with Melinda, Randy and Bethany in the New Year.
Coming full circle, I hope you are making plans to attend
the 33rd annual meeting in Dunedin, New Zealand, later this
year (August 25 - September 1, 2018). The 2018 meetings
are being hosted by the Otago Museum and the University of
Otago. The information coming from Robert Morris and the
Local Organizing Committee is promising an exciting and
noteworthy meeting. Early bird registration is currently underway and more information about the meeting can be found
in this newsletter. I hope to see you there!
