This area of the country has historically been where determinate soybeans are grown, but there has been a trend to start growing an earlier maturing indeterminate variety. Other research shows a trend of greater amounts of loss associated with defoliation damage occurring during the early to mid-reproductive stages (R1 and R3) of development so NCIS began its own research project to determine if this was true or not. Two different varieties were used-a MG 4.7 indeterminate and a MG 5.4 determinate variety were planted at Newport. Defoliation was applied at 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 percent at either R1 or R3 stage of growth. The results are shown in Table 12. The losses were significantly greater for the indeterminate MG 4.7 variety at the higher levels of damage (75 and 100 percent at R1 and R3 stages than our current charts would suggest. The determinant MG 5.4 variety also showed higher losses at the higher damage levels (75 and 100 percent but only at the R3 stage. SOYBEANSNorth Dakota A trial was initiated in 2015 to study the impact of simulated hail - plant cut-off/node removal on the yield and percentage of loss of "Natto" soybeans. "Natto" soybeans are a specialty type of soybeans grown for food use in Asia and there were suggestions from adjusters that these types of soybeans did not recover as well as traditional soybeans after a hail event. The trials were conducted at the Prosper research farm just west of Fargo. Node removal treatments were applied at V-3 and R-1 growth stages with removal levels of 25, 50, 75, and 100 percent. The first year average losses are shown in Table 13. The losses for the 75 percent node removal treatment at R-1 stage, and the 100 percent removal treatment at V-3, have higher losses than our current charts suggest. This is the first year of this trial, so we will need further data to determine if this type of specialty soybean is more susceptible to node removal than traditional soybeans. The NCIS research program could not happen without the support of NCIS member companies. For more than 90 years the research has provided the science behind the industry loss adjustment procedures. This provides company adjusters with the knowledge they need to determine accurate losses, giving farmers peace of mind knowing that their loss has been adjusted accurately and fairly.
