A glimpse into the 2016 Montana
loss adjuster school

In June, more than 90 eager adjusters
filled the Bos Terra Facility for the 2016 NCIS
MPCI and Crop-Hail School in Moccasin,
Montana. While some participants were local
to the area, others traveled from as far as Canada and Wyoming to learn the ins-and-outs of
loss adjusting on canola, chick peas, dry peas,
and lentils. NCIS staff liaison, Dean Strasser
and NCIS Montana Regional/State Crop Insurance Committee Chairman, Bob McPherson led the group throughout two days of educational material.
"I think one of the more important takeaways from this school, or any NCIS sponsored school, is the sharing of experiences
between adjusters with differing levels of
experience and adjusters attending from different parts of the country," Dean explained.
"I first attended this adjuster school in June
of 1997. The hot topic at the time was broken
stems in wheat as a result of hail and what
effect subsequent wind had on those stems.
Growing up in Western Kansas I didn't think
that the wind could possibly blow any harder in Montana than it does in Kansas. I saw
first-hand what hail can do to wheat and I saw
plenty of broken stems hang on for dear life
in those Kansas winds. I learned that coming from a different part of the country we
sometimes look at things differently. Those

who grew up watching Johnny Carson will
remember him beginning monologues with
something along the lines of "It was so hot..."
and the crowd without hesitation would ask
"How hot was it?" In those early trips to Montana it was like a Johnny Carson monologue
when someone would say "It was so windy"
and others would ask 'How windy was it?'"
Dean further explained the significance
of attending an NCIS school versus learning
about the crop insurance industry just by
reading the handbooks.
"I also think that there are many aspects of
adjusting that cannot be found in a book," he
added. "Adjuster schools allow the sharing of
