during the early phase of flowering. During
the first week of flowering, removing 100
percent of the flowering raceme resulted in a
20 percent loss. Yield loss increased with later treatments with an average of 55 percent
loss for 100 percent damage when applied
two weeks after the start of flowering. The
loss increased to 65 percent loss after 100
percent damage applied after three weeks of
flowering and reached 80 percent loss when
applied after four weeks of flowering.

CHICKPEASNorth Dakota
Chickpeas are a crop similar to field peas
and lentils where the cotyledons stay below
ground for the early growth of the plant. This
allows the plants to recover from early hail
quite well since there is really no stand reduction, but rather a cut-off. Hail is usually
of greatest concern during the later vegetative
and flowering to pod fill stages.
Research began in 2013 and continued
in 2014 to look at simulated hail damage on
chickpea growth and development. Simulated
hail was applied at three growth stages: vegetative, first flower, and late flower/pod set.
Damage levels of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 percent were applied to the plants at each stage
of growth. There was little loss from damage
applied at the vegetative stage (10 percent loss
for the 100 percent damage). Loss was greatest as the plants matured to the late flowering
stage with approximately 69 percent loss with
100 percent damage.
A second study was initiated in 2015 to
determine the components of chickpea yield,
specifially the number of pods and seeds per
plant for MPCI appraisal methods. Six different varieties from the two different seed
classes (Desi/small and Kabuli/large) were
used in the trial. Various seed characteristics were measured including average seed
size, average seed weight, average number of
seeds per plant, average number of pods, and
average seeds per pod. The Desi types had a
lower average seed size when compared with
the Kabuli types. The Desi types averaged 38
seeds per plant and 35 pods per plant, while
the Kabuli types averaged 18 seeds per plant
and 27 pods per plant. There was an average
of nine empty pods per plant.

24-inch spacing at the chile pepper research project in Las Cruces,
New Mexico.
