Crop Insurance Today - 29

Drs. Randy Fortenberry, James Richardson, Gary Schnitkey, and Mechel "Mickey" Paggi
(not pictured) provided an ag economist perspective on the current farm economy as Congress
prepares for the 2018 Farm Bill.

"It proves how efficient the current system is,
and it proves that crop insurance is a well-run
public-private partnership," he concluded. "It's a
great story, and it's one we will tell over and over
again as perennial critics of farm policy look to
weaken farmers' risk management tools."
A panel of commodity, farm organization and
conservation representatives spoke at the convention to discuss their organizations' priorities
for farm policy in the 2018 Farm Bill.
"Crop insurance is the most important program to corn growers," said Sam Willet, National Corn Growers Association. "It's almost 2 to 1
over other farm programs."
Robbie Minnich, National Cotton Council,
told the group that crop insurance is a top priority for cotton farmers, too. "90 percent of cotton
farmers purchase some type of crop insurance,"
he said. "We have to maintain that program."

Other members of the commodity panel included: Zack Clark, National Farmers Union;
Bruce Knight, Strategic Conservation Solutions;
Kellis Moss, Ducks Unlimited; Mary Kay Thatcher, American Farm Bureau Federation; and,
Joshua Tonsager, National Association of Wheat
Growers.
A panel with well-known agricultural economists rounded out the second day of the convention. The panel was moderated by Dr. Mechel
"Mickey" Paggi, Agricultural Policy Analyst for
NCIS. Panelists included Dr. T. Randall Fortenberry, Professor and Endowed Chair in the
School of Economic Sciences, Washington State
University; Dr. James Richardson, Co-director
of the Agricultural & Food Policy Center and
AgriLife Senior Faculty Fellow and Regents Professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Texas A&M University; and, Dr. Gary

David Feherty, golf commentator, host of the
Golf Channel show "Feherty," author, and allaround good guy, entertained the convention
attendees on their final day in Florida. Feherty
talked a little about his career, about the events
he's commentated on, and some of the guests
on his show. But by far his favorite subject is
his Troops First Foundation, an organization
that provides golf, biking and other experiences
for service men and women to participate in.

Economist, Dr. Robert Johansson; and, David
Wasserman, the Cook Political Report.
Thank you to all who attended and participated in the convention!
