President
George
Washington
President George Washington is with his wife, Martha. The
George Washington doll is wearing his special full revolutionary
war military uniform. He carries a sword and has leatherette
boots. The Martha doll is wearing a pale yellow dress with over
shawl. Both of these dolls have painted features with gray mohair.
distinctive style in painting and dressing that may explain the
variations over the course of the making of the dolls.
As for the portrait dolls in the series, some were
considered more common such as George and Martha
Washington. Many of the dolls later produced are considered
quite rare and only a few were actually made to order.
The dolls were constructed by different methods. Some
dolls had clay heads hands and feet, with painted hair and
features. Variations of the dolls include pressed clay heads
with mohair wigs
Pictures are from the collection of Eleanor McBride, she
is a longtime member of UFDC and a member of The Sleepy
Hollow Doll Club in New York. She has collected these dolls
for decades. If you have any dolls to share please send her a
message. Her email is mrsmac0724@yahoo.com.
