In 1955 and 1956, Cissy was produced with a beautiful, but
complex, painted finish with its multiple layer of application.
She began to appear in a series of magazine ads for Yardley, a
company that started in the 1700s that wanted to create a fresh
and modern new look. The campaign was so successful it was
used throughout Europe, giving Cissy, an American fashion
doll, and unparalleled world exposure. In 1957, Cissy would
make an important production transition. She began the year
with the painted finish of the previous two years and midyear
changed to a new style of plastic. Cissy's creamy skin tones
were now "infused" into the hard plastic.
1958, Cissy is now described in the company catalog as
being a 21-inch doll. Cheek color becomes a notch bolder, her
eyebrows become more arched, and a finer Saran fiber is now
exclusively used for her wigs. In hindsight, Cissy had peaked
in 1957. As is the pattern of the doll business, everything has
a self-life. Cissy, as a fashion doll, had reached hers by 1959.
Cissy would start to receive a new one-piece vinyl arm and a
new body type. This new body caused her head to sit lower
on her neck creating what collectors would dub the no-neck
Cissy. Cissy's distant cousin, the Revlon Doll by Ideal, along
with all the other large manufactures, had switched over to
vinyl fashion dolls with rooted hair in 1957. Cissy kept to
her hard plastic head and body, along with a sophisticated
assortment of wigs created for the company. As a play doll,
her durability took a back seat to her beauty as a fashion doll
for Alexander's upscale market.
From 1955 through 1958, Cissy was a huge success for
Madame Alexander, and she marked a new genre of large
fashion doll for the doll industry. Other manufactures had
their own interpretations of the doll along with extra
clothing and accessories. For Cissy, her slow down can be
seen in the 1959 Madame Alexander company catalog with
significantly less dressed dolls and extra available clothing
than the previous years. 1959 was the last year for Cissy in
contemporary clothing as a fashion doll. She was now about to
