Steiff's Cloth Dolls:
Fifty Years of Extraordinary Quality, Design, and Craftsmanship

he German firm Margarete Steiff GmbH, better known as "Steiff,"
has a half-century long tradition of manufacturing world-class
cloth dolls. Although better known for their irresistible and highly
collectible Teddy bears, as well as lifelike animals, Steiff's early
20th century dolls are still turning heads today for their classic and endearing
presentations, attention to detail, and groundbreaking originality. As such,
today these rarities often play the role of "crown jewels" in the doll
collections of enthusiasts from all over the world.
Steiff's cloth dolls were manufactured on a
commercial scale from 1903 through the
early 1950s. Over this five-decade span,
the company's basic doll pattern
evolved significantly, and was marked
by four basic pattern types. These
are "Karikaturpuppen" or character
dolls (c. 1903 through the 19-teens);
"transitional" dolls (c. 1908 through
1912); "proportional" dolls
(c. 1909 through the late 1920s);
and "pressed felt" faced dolls
(c. 1936 through the early
1950s.) This article will detail
the basic features, designs,
and strategies behind each
of the four patterns, with the
goals that readers will be
able to identify Steiff dolls
by era, as well as understand
what makes each type so
interesting from the design
and historical perspectives.
