time - but sometimes as large as 115 cm. for special
displays and orders. They were fully jointed and made
from felt or a combination of felt and linen during World
War I. All featured vertical, center seamed faces, mohair
wigs, and glass eyes from around 1910 onward.
Steiff's range of "proportional" dolls was quite
extensive. It included children, students with backpacks
or book bags, tradesmen, peasants, police, members of
the military, clowns, and people representing different
parts of the world and dressed in native costumes,
among many others. The children and soldier
patterns today are seen most often on the secondary
market and in collections, probably because they
were produced in the greatest numbers over the
longest period of time.
Each proportional child doll came alive with
extremely well-made, fully removable clothing,
shoes, and undergarments. Girls were detailed with
charming hats and could be special ordered with
long, brushable hair.
Because of their universal appeal, these children dolls
were featured in many dramatic, larger scaled window
displays as well as smaller, play vignettes. The "Village
School," a beloved display, was produced in in two
sizes: a smaller one with nine dolls as pupils and their
teacher, and a larger one with 13 pupils and their teacher.
All perfectly scaled and authentic looking classroom
furniture and accessories could be ordered from Steiff. In
1910 Steiff sold 45 complete sets of these school displays.
In 2012, a partial Village School set sold for $50,000 at a
Theriault's auction.
The 35 cm. proportional style "German Infantryman"
was made between 1914 and 1922. Also shown is the
button and ear tag from "German Infantryman."
This 22 cm. proportional
style "Meta" doll was
manufactured between
1917 and 1919.
