The first Mary Hoyer doll, the bent arm skater doll, was
produced by Ideal Doll Company. The small black and white
photograph is of the doll as it appeared in Juvenile Styles.

Saunders also believes that Lipfert was a bit taken with the
lovely Mary (in her thirties at the time), and she can see
some of her grandmother's features in the still used Mary
Hoyer sculpt. The now "original Mary Hoyer doll," made
of composition, had painted eyes and mohair wigs. The
first dolls were not marked Mary Hoyer Doll; but soon after
William Hoyer added the raised letters on their backs.
World War II changed the lives of all Americans.
Materials for things such as doll making were scarce; the
first doll molds necessitated painted eyes because the
metal needed for sleep eyes was used for the war effort.
The Hoyers, of course, knew the limitations and embraced
the necessary hardships as part of continuing business.
But the end of the war brought exciting new advances
and opportunities for their company. The development of
durable plastics had been made for the war effort and used
