in the manufacturing of canteens and gun butts, and for other
military uses. Not only could America's factories be converted
from making war materials to toys and dolls but they provided
jobs for returning soldiers.
The Hoyers were very wise and easily adapted, going from
the original wood pulp doll with painted eyes to wood pulp
with sleep eyes and finally in the late 1940s to hard plastic dolls
with sleep eyes. The two-piece wood-pulp doll molds were
converted to molds in which plastic was injected into the forms.
Originally using mohair wigs, the Hoyers took advantage of
new advances in other products such as saran, nylon and dynel
wigs. Today some collectors consider the hard plastic Mary
Hoyer dolls with saran or dynel wigs to be the most beautiful.
Some Hoyer aficionados can estimate the decade of a Mary
Hoyer doll not only by the wig but by how "chunky" the doll's
body is. The molds for the hard plastic dolls were lined with
nickel to make the removal of the finished parts easier. Over
time the nickel was worn away and the molds needed to be
replated. As the mold was relined with nickel, the interior got
smaller and smaller. Therefore, the dolls made early on with
the "fresh" molds have thicker bodies, arms, and legs. "When I
decided to revive the company again 26 years ago, I used one of
the original "chunky" dolls to make the new mold." Saunders
said, "I knew I would get six percent shrinkage when we
converted to the vinyl rotation molding process."
