By the late 1850s with ever-increasing industrial production
of material goods - including dolls like this composition
headed example - and the materials with which they were
dressed it is no surprise that the contents of a doll's wardrobe
would expand. The contents of this doll's wardrobe follow
early commercial doll clothes patterns that were easy for a
budding dressmaker to succeed at on her way to perfecting
her skills. Note that there is little cutting or shaping to the
garments or their component pieces. Buck Collection

"Alan", a Merz china head on
Frederick Haas patented sitting body
for Fischer Naumann, is a typical
young Englishman from the mid
1860s. The traumas of his life are to
be read in his brotherly-broken limbs.
Some of his trousers have longer legs
to fit his original leg length, others
shorter for after the accident. His
broken arm came late in his play
life and was ignored. His wintersummer, formal -informal wardrobe
was created by his owner's nanny
and is stored in his labeled Izzard
London toy store chest of drawers.
