"The Widow Wilson", with her Hertwig
china head and limbs, has had a long, active
life. She makes her debut in the 1880s with a winter
wool two-piece dress and her wardrobe expands
over the years culminating with widow's weeds
dating to about 1905. We can deduce from her mostly
homemade garments that she was the companion of
a middleclass American child or perhaps children in
multigenerational usage. Coleman Collection

This much-cherished homemade cloth black man
dating to about 1900 obviously represented a successful
entrepreneur or man- about-town. From his
visored cap to his tailed suit with watch fob
he was a stylish dude. Coleman Collection
