with a door prize, or two or three. One of our favorite
teenage boys helps at this event. A challenge was issued
last year to sew a doll from an Edith Flack Ackley pattern
dressed in a holiday theme. One of the people who took
the challenge had never heard of EFA dolls until last year's
gathering. She created two dolls and shared them with the
group. Another gathering involved audience participation
for a chance at a door prize. Word is the dance off was won
by an 80-year-old lady. You go girl!
The day isn't over after the gatherings. Friends still
visit in their rooms or the hotel common areas to chat and
show off their latest purchases. Souvenirs from luncheon
or dinner events are passed around for everyone to
admire. By midnight or 1:00 A.M., it's usually time to head
to bed. Tomorrow there is somewhere to be at 8:00 A.M.
unless you are one of the lucky few who don't have an
early obligation.
Volunteers are the heart of the convention. This is a way
for members to make new friends and learn more about
dolls. Clerking dolls in and out of the competitive exhibit
is a popular job. One of our very talented doll artists was
doing this very thing on Saturday afternoon. You will meet
many people both working with them and helping others
enter their dolls. Stories are told about these lovely treasures
and when checking the dolls out, you may share the joy
of winning ribbons. Other volunteers sit and monitor the
special exhibit rooms, helper room, competitive exhibits
both for the highlight tours and during regular open hours
and more. The mini office and registration need volunteers
to make our days run smoothly. Table hostesses at the
banquet keep the conversation going over dinner. All these
opportunities and more await you at a UFDC National
Convention. Just to put icing on the cake, after making all
these new friends and learning so much more about dolls,
you will receive a little charm or pin for your hours of
