1942: Roma Hopkinson's House accurately
records the built environment of its era as well as
the domestic concerns of many Londoners during
the Blitz. The box-like brick construction is an
exact replica of the London County Council Estate
house where Roma was born and grew up. Local
municipal councils built affordable public "council"
housing that was solidly constructed, at this time
with two bedrooms and located on planned "estate"
communities that have amenities like schools, parks,
and shops. Roma made the house in the 1990s,
recreating her family as dolls. The House opens onto
a plain staircase with a stair runner and stair rods
typical of the period. Even with the pervasive sense
of danger, there is a sense of British calm in this
cozy house. Father is gathering his air raid warden
gear that includes his tin helmet and gas masks.
Bill, the father: "St Helier's a really big estate, so I've got
my trusty bike to cover a lot of ground. It's a bit more
difficult when there's a blackout though, the streets round
here all look similar and there's still lots of debris about
from last week's blast."
1960s: When Jenny's Home burst onto the pages
of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, every little
girl had to have one. The Tri-ang company's SpotOn division in Belfast was one of the first to use
injection molding to make the Home's diminutive
1:16 furnishings, modular rooms, and dolls. Multiethnic friends gather in the sitting room around a
TV, updating the cultural and social realities of the
'60s. Jenny's Home and its dolls, furnishings, and
accessories continue to be a popular collectible and
has an online following especially by those who
played with Jenny in their own childhood. Jenny:
"My rent's pretty affordable - after all I've only got one
room really, but it's cleverly divided into different spaces
for sleeping, cooking and socializing and, don't tell my
