caricature is a representation of
someone that exaggerates their features
for a comic effect. Since the early 1800s,
periodicals and other publications
have often caricatured people who are leaders
in public life, such as presidential candidates
and presidents. Satirizing the looks or behaviors
of public figures cannot result in charges of
defamation, and the caricaturist or satirist
cannot be sued. Many famous artists, such as
Hogarth and Daumier, built much of their artistic
reputations on this type of art. Spy and Puck,
important humor magazines in the late 19th and
early 20th century, featured caricatures and were
influential in affecting public opinion. Caricatures,
along with cartoons, have continued to appear in
various contemporary newspapers, magazines
and publications of the day. Using paper dolls
as an editorial device can be an effective way to
show various characteristics of political figures.
The caricatures often poke fun at the presidential
candidates during their campaigns, after someone
wins the election and prior to their taking the oath
of office.
Presidents have appeared frequently in the
cutout section of newpapers as a way for children
to learn more about them. As the first Comanderin-chief and President of the United States of
America, George Washington has always been and
continues to be a popular figure depicted in the
press. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, he
appeared many times in periodicals for children to
cut out. This example from The Boston Globe in 1910
was printed as a supplement and shows our first
president as a heroic figure with one arm behind
his back and wearing his military uniform.
William McKinley ran for president in 1896.
This interchangeable paper doll of McKinley was
published in The Boston Globe on August 23, 1896.
By changing the foreheads, hair and lower faces,
the basic McKinley can become the other three
candidates for president: William Jennings Bryan,
Garrett A. Hobart or Arthur Sewall. McKinley won
the election and served until 1901 when he was
assassinated.
