Made by UNIS of France, this 5-inch tinted bisque pair both have glass eyes and open mouths. They wear the popular costumes of Brittany seen on many of these little dolls. Their box has the white paper lace trim often found on the original boxes of these dolls. Above a rather staring-eyed little girl in Alsacean outfit is five inches tall (six inches with her hat). She has bright blue painted eyes and a closed mouth. She is "crispy" mint inside her paper lace trimmed box. The boy made by UNIS of France and the two boys in the middle of the larger six-doll set are attired much like the gentleman dressed in the costume of Brittany as shown in this illustration taken from a map of France. Left, an ad from the UFDC reprint of Printemps Paris Store Catalogue 1900-1901 shows a Couple MariƩs Bretons or married couple of Breton. The brief description mentions they have bisque heads and are dressed in silk. DOLL NEWS * ufdc.org 131http://ufdc.org
