Toy Shop Window 1920-1945

Outside the window peeking in stand two young
children (a large Mothereau bébé and a large Steiner
marked "C" with her china doll) longingly dreaming of
Christmas morning.

1890-1920 Window

Unifying themes were all the rage during this era
with department stores competing for the best Christmas
window display. Customers waited for hours outside of
Macy's in anticipation of the unveiling of their annual
Christmas window. The toy shop window had become its
own art form.
True to the era, this window features a wonderful
Christmas-themed display. Toys displayed in this window
include German characters, candy containers, feather trees,
Schoenhuts, Steiffs, dolly-faced dolls, googlies, snow babies,
pâpiér-maché Santas, "Frozen Charlottes" and "Charlies" as
chimney sweeps and books and toys of the period.
The centerpiece vignette is a recreation of another
popular German tradition of the turn of the century, the
Christmas postcard. It features two children (a Kammer &
Reinhardt model 112 boy with flocked hair and a Hertel
Schwabb character with glass eyes, mold 141) in their
living room greeting Santa Claus just after he filled their
tabletop feather tree with toys.
Atop the window are four circa 1900 reindeer candy
containers pulling a Santa in a sleigh replete with antique
toys and miniature dolls.

1920 - 1945 Window

Who doesn't love a baby in a nursery delivered by its
stork? And let's not forget Shirley Temple! By this time,
toy shop windows were well established as a way to
