Looking back, it's not always
apparent what inspired a given
design, however, in the case of a
little group we called "Tea at the
Waldorf" the origin is clear - it
was the beautiful studio portrait
of my grandmother, father and
uncle circa 1928. Originally a
group of three, including a big
sister to "Teddy," "Veronica
and Teddy" were chosen for
the cover of DOLL, a United
Kingdom magazine for their
September issue that year. They
were also picked for the cover
of the book, Helen Kish, the Artist
and Her Dolls, by Louise Fecher,
published in 2006 by Reverie.
The 6-inch porcelain
"Sweethearts - Sweet Pea,
BonBon and Candy Cane"
are three of a six-piece special
edition that we made for Denver
Doll Emporium in 2004. The
sculpt of these little girls was the
precursor to "Riley."
"Riley's" world was well
represented in the display. We
showed the very first "Riley"
(New Orleans 2003). "Tulah"
was "Riley's" first friend,
represented by "Tuscan Sun
Tulah." The first boy in "Riley's"
world was "DJ." "Jimi,"
"Riley's" African American
friend made his first appearance
at 'Music, Music, Music' the
UFDC national convention in
Detroit; and "Sauder Village
Riley" was another special event
piece. My memory escapes me
on the date...but I remember
how delighted I was with my
first drawing of a cow for her
bucket! "Kiley" entered "Riley's"
world much later along with her
little sister, "Miki," but many
fewer of these dolls were ever
produced. "Riley" retired in 2016
at the Region 6 conference in
Billings, Montana.
