2017 UFDC

Annual Report President

A

s I complete my fourth and last term as an officer of the UFDC's Executive Committee I look back with great pride in what has
been accomplished over the past eight years and with great confidence as to what I know will be accomplished in the future. It has
been a privilege to serve our organization as its President and I thank our members for placing their trust in me to represent them. This
year has been another active one for myself and my fellow officers. We continue to dedicate ourselves to the UFDC and to ensure that our
mandate to "protect, promote and preserve" dolls remains our focus in planning for today and tomorrow.
The United Federation of Doll Clubs has been a volunteer driven organization since its inception. The financial benefit our volunteers
bring is significant and replacing all our volunteers with paid staff would be impossible. We simply could not achieve what we do without
our members help. Members volunteer at all levels of our organization; within clubs, regions and nationally. Their dedication is remarkable
and their contributions too numerous to list. They do this quietly with little or no recognition. Just looking at our annual convention is
a demonstration of our members' loyalty and contributions. Over 400 of the members attending will volunteer at convention. That is
approximately half of all convention attendees. To all our volunteers I thank and salute you. You are appreciated!
From humble beginnings UFDC has grown to be an international organization with members located in 16 countries. However,
while our membership has grown dramatically in past years, over the past decade our membership has seen a decline. This will be our
number one challenge in the future. Our Membership Committee, a standing committee formed in 2012, continues to examine this issue
and look for ways to encourage new membership. In recognition of the critical importance of maintaining a strong membership and
concern about declining numbers, the Executive Committee and Board met in Kansas City last fall for a "membership symposium." This
two-day symposium focussed solely on membership issues. This brainstorming session allowed Regional Directors to meet in person to
discuss issues in their Regions and to share ideas. This proved to be a very effective gathering and it is hoped that more of these will be
held in the future. On a positive note, two unique new clubs became members of our organization this year. UFDC welcomed The Best
Friends Forever BJD Club, whose interest is focussed on ball jointed dolls, and the SWFL Antique Doll Study Guild, which has dedicated
its fundraising efforts solely to supporting UFDC. It is hoped that other clubs may follow their example. The need and importance of our
clubs and members supporting the organization financially cannot be overstressed.
This past year our headquarters once again saw changes in our office staff. Our original team of Financial Manager, Sheryl Sunderman,
and Membership Services Coordinator, Jenny Yocklin, continue to go above and beyond in carrying out their duties and are both dedicated
and highly capable members of our staff. Our Systems Coordinator, Matt Haynes, continues to provide us with expert guidance for
our technical and reporting areas and will be assisting and guiding us as we update our systems. Following last year's convention, our
Shipping Coordinator, Sara Webb, resigned to accept a full time teaching position. Donna Mills has now taken over Sara's position and
other duties as our new ReAL Services Coordinator. Donna has proven to be a great asset and has done a superlative job since taking on
this position. All our staff members will be on site in Orlando and they will all be hard at work during their time there.
In my report last year, it was mentioned that a position for a Museum, Library and Archives Coordinator had been created and a staff
person had been hired in that role. In June this position was terminated as the Executive Committee determined that it was not succeeding
in achieving the goals that the Executive Committee had originally set out. This position will be reviewed and a new position will be
created that will better serve the museum, library and archives.
The museum has accomplished great things this past year. A great amount of work has gone into cataloguing of the collection.
Loretta Nardone, ReAL Services Coordinator, Bradley Justice, Chair of the Collections Oversight Committee and the members of
the Collections Oversight Committee have worked exceedingly hard to promote, maintain and further develop the collection. In
October the first symposium focussed on an area of the collection was held. This symposium dedicated itself to examining the DeWees
Cochran collection. The UFDC Museum has the foremost collection of not only DeWees Cochran dolls but also archival materials. This
symposium was a great success and a following symposium will be held this fall focussing on the remarkable French fashion doll,
"Madeleine de Baine," and her extensive wardrobe. In the spring another event is being planned that will examine the American doll
icon, "Barbie." Following the "Madeleine de Baine" symposium, Alice Leverett will hold another one of her successful workshops and
this one will focus on one of Madeleine's costumes.
Our collection has seen remarkable growth in the past few years. Our members continue to show their generosity through their gifts,
both financial and in doll and doll-related items. One of the most remarkable gifts we have received is the Sanitary Fair Doll from 1864,
"Ethel Newcome." It was my great honor to officially receive Ethel on behalf of UFDC during a luncheon held by the Letitia Penn Doll
Club in December in Philadelphia. It was my first opportunity to view the doll and her magnificent and original wardrobe in person.
Becky and Andy Ourant did an amazing display of her during the event and I thank them for their help and assistance in packing and
delivering the doll into our care. Our members will be introduced to "Ethel" in Orlando as she will be one of the special exhibits during
convention. She will then be transported to her permanent home in Kansas City for both our members and the public to enjoy. I sincerely
thank our four donors who have made this significant addition to our collection possible: Julie Blewis, Susan Foreman Lewis, Sandy
