proportionate to that of a young
child, and a finish was developed
that maintained a more realistic
matte pink body complexion. The
choice to use painted eyes was a
direct adaption from the models
made by Marion Kaulitz. The use
of single-stroke eyebrows and no
painted lashes was also a direct
adherence with the original art
character dolls. The glass-eyed
versions of models 100, 101, 109,
112 and 114 have an artistically
designed style of glass eye that
was only used for these models,
they also have uniquely painted
upper eyelashes.
The model 100 mold, in
its time, was the most widely
manufactured and popular
doll in the series so it is not
surprising how many appear in
today's market. We collectors
affectionately, but incorrectly,
call it the "Kaiser baby." In
actuality it has no connection to
Kaiser Wilhelm but was named
"Lachendes baby," meaning
"laughing baby." The model is
typically found on baby bodies
but it can come as a toddler. It was
manufactured in various shades
of color, from a light brown to
a very dark black. It was also
available either with painted eyes
or sleep eyes. The doll was made
in celluloid as well. A number of
dolls in the series were produced
in celluloid with those numbers
being in the 700s so these dolls
will not be included in this study
that focuses entirely on the
100 number series. The photos
here illustrate all the numerous
variations of the model 100
doll, but of course, the painted
eye version in Caucasian skin
coloring on a baby body is the
most commonly found. Today the

price point for most collectors with so many are available on the market.
The 100 model being such a pivotal doll in the evolution of the character
movement is well worth having in any collection. As a final point, in reprint
of letters between Franz Reinhardt and Professor Lewin-Funke, Reinhardt
made it clear that he, and many of his customers, found it to be an ugly
baby. In response to the criticism, it is widely believed, if not conclusively
documented, that Lewin-Funcke went on to reluctantly sculpt a second
baby based on his own son Andreas in 1911 that is the 116 mold.
Next in the series is the immensely popular model 101, known as
"Marie" when dressed as a girl and "Peter" as a boy. The model 101
was also sculpted by Lewin-Funcke as a portrait of his oldest daughter,
