such a complete departure that it
is not included here. This study of
the 100 series in this article stops
when the series lost its nod to the
realistic child. As darling as "Max
& Moritz" are, (the characters
numbered 123 & 124) they are
portrayals of comic characters not
of the child in the streets.
Sadly the true character dolls
were only produced until 1914 as it
became apparent that what began
with such hope and optimism in
1908 had become a commercial
failure. The doll manufacturers
were looking for profit and
if artistic expression in doll
manufacturing was not resulting
in greater sales they would cease
to produce them. The Ciesliks quoted a
newspaper from the times reporting on
the decision to smash and destroy the
remaining inventory of character heads
from the warehouse and shelves to make
room for more traditional and saleable dolls.
This accounts for the scarcity of so many
of these molds discussed and why they
are so highly priced and expensive today.
The departure from the previous dolly-face
dolls, so prevalent in Germany in 1909, put
Kämmer & Reinhardt in the forefront of the
character doll movement, but the freedom
and creativity this afforded the artists was
short lived. We are so fortunate to have an
amazing series of dolls come out of this brief
renaissance in doll manufacturing!
