Steiner's
Japanese-type
Babies

This beautiful and very rare early
example of Jules Nicholas Steiner's
Japanese-type baby is referred to by
collectors as the "bisque hip Steiner."
Notice while most Ichimatsu dolls have
white complexions, some are light
pink, like this Steiner baby, and some
others that are supposed to represent
newborn babies (taufling) have red skin.
Unfortunately, the photo does not show
the almost white bisque. Like most the
early Steiner bisque babies, the doll has
cobalt blue, enamel, stationary eyes and
a closed mouth. The shoulder head with
its round face is unmarked, and the doll's
original blond mohair wig is placed over
a solid dome. As one may see from this
photo of the nude baby, it was inspired
very much by the Japanese babies
shown at the 1850 London Exhibition.
It has the typical fabric jointing and
connection at the upper arms and upper
legs, plus a highly detailed pelvis and
derrière of the bisque lower torso like
the Ichimatsu babies. The crier is located
in the soft midsection of the body. The
sculpting of the baby's bisque hands and
feet emulates the beautiful detail and
shading of a real child. The doll measures
