The great interest of this baby was noted
right away by Art Historian, Natalis Rondot,
well informed on the oriental production,
who wrote on his 1855 Paris Exposition
Universelle report that François Greffier had
displayed some interesting and well-made
Japanese-type bébés, with unique articulated
arms and legs. The dolls made a baby noise
when the body was pressed. We have not
found any patent by François Greffier, but
we present here a tiny all-articulated, 19 cm,
Japanese-type baby that makes sounds too.
Jules Nicholas Steiner's early dolls also
have the typical round, Asian-type head,
and the white complexion of their faces
shows how much he was influenced by
the Japanese dolls, too. However, Jules
Nicholas Steiner was a clockmaker and to
make inanimate dolls could not satisfy his
passion. He very soon used his knowledge
to make mechanical dolls and toys.
His 1855 patent for a "Poupée Mécanique"
was deposed on the 19th of September 1855,
and delivered on the 15th of November of
the same year, the same time the Exposition
Universelle was occurring in Paris.
This patent shows a baby capable of
doing all that the so-called "gigoteurs"
do; and even more, as this baby is also
supposed to open and close his mouth
when "talking."
However, this early mechanism is
totally different from the one used for the
"gigoteur" years later, and we do not know
if this very early mechanical baby has ever
been on the market.
This is an early example of a "gigoteur"
baby with the typical "moon face"
and dramatic cobalt blue eyes
contrasting with the white bisque
that unfortunately does not show in
the photo. He is wearing his original
Steiner bourrelet hat worn to prevent
the baby from hurting his head when
he falls. His wig is missing, but could
well have been of white lambskin.
Displayed with his original trunk and
trousseau. The doll measures 45 cm.
