Returning to the "gigoteur" mystery, this doll is special first,
because of its strange and unusual eyes, which seem to pierce your
soul, also because of the large opening (closed by a kind of papiermâché dome) in the back of the crown that was a mystery to me at
first. I took photos of this rare baby for study and returned it quickly
to its owner, this time, not only because of the open mouth, but also
because of his strange way of staring at you.
Few months later after this strange experience, I had the pleasure
of meeting a "gigoteur" named "Louise," who finally became mine,
after waiting for 40 years. She had such a delicate complexion, and
her sweet smile was so attractive, that I could easily forget the tiny
opened mouth with the two rows of tiny teeth. Her small size of 45
cm. did help too.
Then, the "Bébé Gigoteur" mystery came back to my mind and the
two dolls caused me to decide to try to study the well-known "Bébé
Gigoteur," who is wrongly attributed the 1855 patent.
Maybe, one day, we will find this interesting doll shown in the
1855 patent, perhaps coming from a family, or even an unknown
private collection. Who knows? Jules Nicholas Steiner was enough
of a genius to have been able to produce such a doll. We will have to
wait and see.
Note the moon-shaped head of this baby and
the strange piercing gaze of his vibrant hot, blue
eyes. We believe those rare eyes could have been
made in very small quantity using one of the
several processes for doll eyes proposed by Jules
Nicholas Steiner in his February 2, 1881 patent,
with an addition on the May 19 of the same year.

in his favorite purple
color. One may also
find some bodies in
a blue/green or offwhite color.
These rare hands with
five separate fingers
allow the baby to wear
gloves. Only a few
Ichimatsu dolls show
this kind of hand.
The bisque crown is unusual as it is open on the
back and closed with a carton top. Note the white
parts on each side made of plaster. This intriguing
"gigoteur" head was, in fact, made to receive the
1880 patented lever eyes mechanism although this
example is on a different body.
