From the Editor
Dear Readers,

A

s I put my pen to paper one last time as
the Editor of DOLL NEWS I reﬂect on the
pleasure that I have had working with
so many authors/researchers to help them share their valuable
information. I have strived to provide new information to readers,
and I hope that you have found diversity in the articles during
these two years. Perhaps you have been inspired to add some of
the dolls mentioned in these articles to your personal collections.
Doll collecting has always been a great joy to me, and I have met
the most interesting people through volunteering in UFDC.
In this issue Julie Blewis has gathered fascinating information
about the sculptor of the renowned Kammer and 100 series of
characters. She has provided wonderful examples of the complete
100 series including photos of the some of rarest characters.
Samy Odin has introduced many to the Italian dolls made by the
Burgarella company. Much of his research is based on a company
catalog in the UFDC Museum library. Dominique Pennegues has
discussed "Steiner's Japanese-type Babies."
As always the fall issue includes comprehensive information
about our 2017 UFDC National Convention including three
separate articles sharing more in-depth information about three of
the Special Exhibits.
Tuck-comb style dolls have provided the inspiration for the
paper doll in this issue that can be fabric-dressed. It has been
designed by Victoria Christopherson and can be used as a holiday
decoration. Susan Sirkis has provided a pattern for an additional
costume for the convention souvenir doll, "Ma Petite," modeled
after a 19th century Raphael Tuck paper doll. It would also make a
darling Halloween costume for any similar doll of this size.
Woolsy Ackerman has explored the imaginative designs and
production of Joseph Kallus dolls and toys; and Ursula Mertz
presents material about illustrator Grace Drayton and her dolls.
This article is coordinated with a special exhibit opening at the
UFDC Museum October 1.

they begin production of another two
years of our wonderful DOLL NEWS
magazine. I also thank the UFDC
ofﬁcers, the ofﬁce staff and the layout
team for their support during my term
as editor. It has been a wonderful,
memorable experience!
