Design in New York City. After completing her studies in fashion design
at Traphagen, Margit extended her art education when she traveled to
France to study sculpting. With this newly found skill she acquired a
better knowledge and appreciation of the human form.
While furthering her studies in France she was introduced to the
lavish 19th century French fashion dolls and their magnificent clothing.
She became fascinated with these beauties, considering them as yet
another form of art.
Upon returning to the United States, she met and married a Cuban
diplomat, Sergio G. Gomez. Gomez was her first husband but not her
last. In her lifetime the beautiful temptress Margit had several husbands
and numerous lovers.
Her earlier enchantment with French fashion dolls began to change
from admiration to inspiration, and she became motivated to generate
her own version of these haute couture figures. Her ability as a sculptress
blended with her education in the world of fashion resulted in the
subsequent design and creation of her countertop mannequins.
Margit did not sculpt from a live model, instead, she preferred to rely
upon her own imagination. Using the medium she felt most comfortable
with, clay, she created her master model. As she sculpted she took
liberties with the female form. Abandoning realism, the artist invented an
exaggerated depiction of a woman's body.
The elongated neck, broad shoulders, narrow waist, and tapered
hips were meant to act as "hangers" for displaying clothes. The facial
expressions of the ladies are haughty, yet, beautiful.
When the sculpt was completed plaster molds were taken from the
clay model. Next the molds were filled with a composition-like material
and then "cured." After removing the dried material from the molds and
several rounds of sanding, coats of flesh-toned paint were applied. The
final paint application achieved a warm and smooth matte finish. Next
came the task of breathing life into the mannequin by detailing facial
features. To attain a realistic look, a staff of talented studio artists were
retained for the make-up application using special paint.
Nilsen is sculpting nude mannequin in her studio.

The Amazing Collection of Clothes
When I purchased Mannequin #1, she was
nude. The dealer casually mentioned, "I left
behind a large amount of clothes. If you would
be interested I would be glad to mail the items
to you when I return home." My response was
a resounding, "Yes!"
When the clothing was delivered, stunning
outfits and beautifully tailored dresses, one
after another, emerged from the packing box.
The entire wardrobe consists of 14 items,
including a bathing suit. To begin describing
