Top left: Pronounced thick brows and richlytextured hair are classic features of Leo Moss dolls. This fellow has unusual modeling of the mouth, with two lower baby teeth. Above: One of the very few white-complexioned dolls made by Leo Moss, this is "Elaine," commissioned by a family in Macon, Georgia, for whom he had reportedly worked. For Christmas 1909, the dollmaker created a doll for each of the three daughters of the family, while his wife made the costumes. Each costume was a copy of a dress she had sewn for that daughter. A note originally accompanied the doll; it appears intact on page 13 in Myla Perkins' book, Black Dolls. Left: A tiny brown-eyed Leo Moss baby has a gentle smile and well-textured hair. 80 WINTER 2018
