1918; according to company records, 850 sets were
sold. The advertising photograph for this set included
Steiff's legacy black "Scary Cat" which debuted on
the cover of the company's debut catalog of 1903. This
cat pattern, still produced with some regularity 115
years onward, is one of the company's oldest and most

Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel were also part of the Grimm's
1812 book, Children's and Household Tales. This fairy tale
involves a clever brother and sister, an evil stepmother,
a cannibalistic witch, and a forest home made from
gingerbread and candy. In 1912, Steiff introduced
"Hansel and Gretel" dolls. "Hansel" was 35 cm and
wore a set of dark felt shorts, a jacket and a white

"Gretel" was 30 cm and was dressed in a skirted dress,
a cotton shirt, and bandana. She appeared in the line
through 1915. Both were made from felt and fully
jointed. Steiff's "Hansel and Gretel" dolls shared many
design elements of the company's enormously popular
line of childlike student dolls which were introduced
around 1909.

Red Riding Hood
"When visiting Grandma, look right and look left,
And be sure to watch out for identity theft."
One of the older fairy tales on record, the origins
of Red Riding Hood can be traced back to the 10th
century through several European versions, including
an Italian one called The False Grandmother. The most
popular and best-known versions of this story were

The story as we know it today revolves around a
little girl off to visit her grandmother and a hungry,
dishonest wolf. Steiff launched its version of "Red
Riding Hood" in 1909. The doll was produced in 28,
35, 43, and 50 cm through 1919 overall. The two largest
sizes had a "mama voice" and all sizes were available
ZLWKH[WUDORQJKDQGLPSODQWHGPRKDLUZLJVIRUDQ
additional charge. The English version was dressed in
a muslin dress with white stockings, while the German
version donned a 'Black Forest' peasant dress; both
versions wore a red hooded cape.
