All three of these dolls have spoon hands and woodencarved boots. The boys in the red and orange flannel type coats, woodencarved legs as well as boots and white peaked hats are from Kirquiz and are marked: MADE IN SOVIET//UNION//8090 KIRQUIZ. The lady in the middle is from Uzbekistan and is marked: MADE IN SOVIET// UNION//UZBECHKA. The close-up of one of the Kirquiz boys shows the nicely molded Asian features used for these dolls. This girl from Uzbekistan has a faded blue flannel outfit with a pale red and blue pompom hat. She still has her tag which reads: "MADE IN SOVIET//UNION// UZBECHKA." From the collection of Rosemary Deal. Dressed in white in the middle of this grouping is a 7-inch tall doll representing the Samoyed indigenous peoples of Siberia. The cloth tag on this doll reads: MADE IN SOVIET//UNION//8085 SAMOED. The dolls on each side have wooden-carved feet and legs. The tag of the doll on the left reads: MADE IN SOVIET UNION//8090 ZIQANKA. The dolls in either side are sometimes called "gypsy" dolls and they do have an interesting appearance-different from the typical peasant dolls. "Ziqanka" is sometimes misspelled as "Ziganka" which is a type of Russian dance. DOLL NEWS * UFDC.ORG 139http://www.UFDC.ORG
