This young collector, probably for the 1930's or 1940's, has amassed a wide array of dolls in folk dress. Among them is a wonderful selection the small (and a few of the larger) Russian stockinette dolls. These two identical girls came in their original unmarked boxes. A handwritten cloth tag on their underclothes reads: 1855 Made in the //Soviet Union. They have flower printed blouses and tunics topped in red that matches the fabric on their scarves, which are sewn in the back to their tunics. In this close-up photograph, notice the second row that contains many of the smaller dolls. Even smaller composition Russian dolls are lined up in the front row. These cloth characters are 6 ½-inch and 7-inches tall. Dressed in peasant costumes, they have very expressive faces and are marked.
