The 16-inch "Saviki" or "Snake" katsina is rarely carved. This example was made by Hopi Oswald White Bear Fredericks. The bottom of the feet has Fredericks' signature. Fredericks appeared in the Walt Disney movie, Boy and the Eagle. ca. 1960s Above: This is the 9-inch "Heheya's Uncle" katsina, whose purpose is to guard the dancers. ca.1945-1955 Far Left: An 11inch "Masau'u" katsina, also known as the "Skeleton" katsina, represents the opposite of everything living, as the world of the dead is the reverse of our world. He does many things in reverse. The colored splotches represent clouds. ca. 1950s Left: The 15-inch "Hemi" katsina is also called the "Home" katsina.
