ship also transported deceased soldiers
in their caskets back home. Although the
ship's records between 1913 and 1919
have been lost, we do know that in the
year of 1915, the USS Solace was in port in
China. We know this because that is the
year that Captain von Wedekind obtained
two beautiful Chinese dolls.
Captain von Wedekind was the second
of seven children and never married. His
younger sister Evelyn is recorded as having
"traveled in foreign climes and has visited
many of the Oriental countries chaperoned
by her brother Luther L. of the United
States Navy." Whether Evelyn was present
at the time the dolls came to Captain von
Wedekind in 1915 or not, she eventually
did become the owner of the dolls, before
passing them on to her nephews, the sons of
the youngest sister Florence. The two dolls
stayed in the family until 1948 when they
were donated to a library in Pennsylvania.
At some point after that the dolls were
deaccessioned from the library collection
and ultimately ended up on the bottom shelf
in the back of a crowded antiques booth
in a mall in Columbia, Pennsylvania. That
is when my dear friend spotted them and
brought them to my attention. Of course,
when I saw them I knew that they were
special, as I saw the provenance card that
accompanied them. There was no question
they would be added to my collection.
The dolls represent a pair of young
children, each with a unique sweet face. The
bodies are carved wood, fully jointed and
share a likeness to the bodies of the French
bebes. The wood appears comparable to
the pear wood used to make the heads
and limbs of the "Door of Hope" dolls and
like the "Door of Hope dolls," the heads,
ears and facial features are carved and
smoothed, with paint applied to the hair,
eyes and eyebrows. They share a similarity
to the "Door of Hope Kindergarten Child,"
in that they each have a small patch of
painted hair above their forehead. However,
there are differences from the "Door of
Hope" dolls. These two dolls are each
approximately 14-inches tall. They have
