due to an inferior plastic which was used to create the arms.
This plastic slowly shrinks over time into a hard, small arm. I
like to call them T-Rex Nancys because the arms are so small
and disproportionate. Nancys during this time and thereafter are
stamped "Famosa Made in Spain".
A hallmark of both these early generations of Nancys is their
rooted hair. Each plug is noticeably separated from the next,
presumably so the factory did not have to use as much material.
Towards the mid-1970s, the hair was sewn closer together so that
Nancy had a better appearance. The shrinking plastic issue was
also fixed, and dolls from this era are quite lovely.
In the early 1980's, Famosa released a line of Nancy dolls
with flexible, foam legs, that are covered in a colorful, sparkly
material. These are called piernas flexibles, which means flexible
legs. These dolls have decal eyes and were dressed in very typical
1980's style fashions. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Famosa
continued producing and releasing Nancy dolls, including fairy
tale dolls, dolls with freckles, and even a talking Nancy.

Eyes

ecause Nancy was not stamped with a date until very
recently, her age can be difficult to determine. One of the

easiest ways to get an idea of Nancy's age is by examining her
eyes. With the exception of the very first (and rare) prototype
Nancy, all of the Nancys from 1969-1980 have ojos margaritas,
which means "daisy eyes." This is because the irises have a
pinwheel, daisy-like shape. Some dolls in the early 1980's also
have daisy eyes, as the factory used up old eyes in making new
dolls. Beginning in the 1980's, Nancy started sporting a new,
decal eye. She continues to have this type of eye today, even in
the re-editions, much to the disappointment of collectors. Eye
colors for Nancy are limited to blue and brown, in both the daisy
eye and the decal eye.

Wardrobe and Accessories

ne of the things that made Nancy such a commercial
success was her fabulous wardrobe. In 1969, a complete
wardrobe was released that included party wear, a tennis outfit,
sleepwear and casual outfits. Nancy's wardrobe has been inspired
by various pop culture icons and fashion houses throughout the
decades. At the time of her creation, Famosa's designers drew
inspiration from Marisol, a young singer and actress in Spain
whose blonde hair and cute wardrobe were adored by millions of
girls. Nancy also had her own coronation outfit, replicated from
