Commonly found and inexpensive were these "papooses" sold to tourists who were not interested in an "authentic" souvenir. Some could even be sent in the mail as the doll second from left (top) with attached card that reads: From RENO, NEVADA.1949. Small souvenir keychain-type dolls under 4-inches were and still are being made with seed beads on leather. Two examples are shown with a 1944 Kimport ad. The pair of dolls was purchased in the 1950s. Small (under 4-inches) all-bisque dolls mostly from Japan, as those seen here, were sold on souvenir stands and represent the more "stereotyped" Indian doll. They could also be found inexpensively on dime-store shelves. The Georgene Averill Company offered a series of cloth dolls in ethnic costume including this doll. Marked "Minnehaha/5091" and standing 13-inches tall, she is all original and was produced in the 1930s and 1940s. 58 SUMMER 2018
