years. We wish this commission well as they
begin a new chapter in the specialty recognition
discussion.
Sleep Apnea, Dentistry, Orthodontics
The ADA adopted resolution 17 from the Council
on Dental Practice, which was a response to Resolution 96H-2015: Development of ADA Policy on
Dentistry's Role in Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders. The AAO has its own Consensus Conference
Task Force on Orthodontics and Sleep Apnea,
which was appointed earlier in the year by President Maleki, with input from task force chairman
and AJO-DO editor Dr. Rolf (Buzz) Behrents. Members of the task force are Drs. James McNamara,
Scott Conley, Benjamin Pliska, Mark Hans, Carlos
Flores-Mir, Anita Shelgikar, J. Martin Palomo,
Mitchell Levine, John Wise, and John Stockstill. I
will serve as trustee liaison to the task force and
look forward to our first conference call next
month. I will discuss our progress in future reports.
Governance and the New Member
At the last AAO HOD, members of the Council on
New and Younger Members (CONYM) were given
the opportunity to appoint a member to serve as
a liaison to each of the AAO Councils and Committees. However, these appointees served without the right to vote on the issues. At this year's
ADA HOD, New and Younger Members (NYM)
were allowed both the opportunity to serve as
liaisons as well as the right to vote. This is a positive and progressive move forward, as we recognize the contributions of these individuals in the
governance of our organization. It is my opinion
that the right to vote should also be granted to
AAO NYMs, when they serve as liaisons to their
respective councils and committees.

BOT as an observer. Dr. Felty made substantial
contributions to discussions of the various issues
before the BOT. This was a progressive step
toward bringing a new perspective to the board
on a variety of issues, especially when questions
came up regarding the impact that a certain resolution or action item might have on this demographic cohort. I think these first efforts to bring
younger members into the governance of our
organization represent a positive step that the
organization must take in order to continue to
be relevant to this growing segment of our
membership.
AAO Staff
By now you have all seen the announcement
regarding the new AAO Executive Director, Ms.
Lynne Thomas Gordon. Lynne was able to join
us at the November BOT meeting and will be
officially on board as of January 8, 2018. We look
forward to her leadership and input as the AAO
moves forward in the last two years of this
decade. As we say hello to Lynne, we bid farewell
to Ms. Anita Craig, who will be retiring from the
AAO as director of education and membership
development. It has been my pleasure to work
with Anita on a variety of projects over the years,
including the Specialized Orthodontic Assistant
(SOA) Program launched in August 2010. Anita
also served as NESO Executive Director during
the eight years that NESO was managed by the
American Association of Orthodontists Services,
Incorporated (AAOSI). Anita will be greatly
missed. We wish her well as she enters a new
chapter in her life.
With the holidays approaching, I want to wish all
my colleagues the very best for the New Year. 

At the November meeting of the AAO Board of
Trustees, the PCSO CONYM member (and the
PCSO Board of Directors member from British
Columbia), Dr. Trista Felty, was invited to join the
