potential orthodontic patients find BCSO members throughout the province.
The BCSO will host a special event in April; the
speaker will be Dr. Luis Carriere. This event will be
exclusive to BCSO members, and we expect it to
be well attended. Our AGM is scheduled for June
15, 2018, in Vancouver.

CAO Leadership
California Association of Orthodontists (CAO) recently elected
and installed officers for 2017-
2018. Serving CAO during the coming year are:
 Dr. Susan Zand, President
 Dr. Mary Cooke, President-elect
 Dr. Katie Bales, Secretary/Treasurer

CAO was also pleased to present the 2017 Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Howard Hunt on
October 14 in Reno. Dr. Hunt has served the orthodontic profession well in many capacities over
the course of his career, and continues to practice
in Eureka.
CAO Consumer Awareness Campaign Continues
The CAO Consumer Awareness Campaign continues to gain traction. With help from our public
relations firm, The Summit Group (TSG), CAO has
been focusing on delivering messages to consumers that are even more targeted toward
orthodontic-specific content. Outreach via CAO
social media channels, in print, and via news
media outlets has been expanded. Our message
to incentivize consumers to seek treatment by an
orthodontic specialist has been pitched to and
picked up by magazines, newspapers, and television outlets across California, and we will continue to seek such placements.

CAO's expanded outreach also extends to our
website. The website is now more consumerfacing and friendly. The "News Bites" section provides an additional opportunity for consumers to
read and comment on the messages that have
been picked up by the media. In addition, by
using a more robust version of the orthodontic
locator, prospective patients are able to identify
CAO member orthodontists practicing in their
area. If you haven't already done so, go to our site
to see what's new and what's happening with
consumer awareness!
CAO members are invited and encouraged to join
a private Facebook page that is being used as an
internal communication tool to share news,
events, and information of interest to members.
CAO members may ask to join this group by
visiting the site. An administrator will be happy
to approve your participation.
Orthodontic Peer Review Calibration
CAO sponsored an annual orthodontic Peer
Review calibration workshop for members who
wish to serve on review panels evaluating complaints made against orthodontic colleagues.
These workshops afford orthodontists who experience dental board complaints the privilege of
being reviewed by peers rather than general dentists who are not familiar with standard orthodontic practices. The session was held on Friday,
November 3, at the Santa Clara County Dental
Society in San Jose. Contact Ann Sebaugh at

becoming a peer reviewer.
Save the Date
CAO will once again sponsor a staff training
event in conjunction with the PCSO Annual Session in Monterey. Tracy Moawad will be offering
the presentation, which will feature a practice
management theme. Mark your calendars for
Thursday, October 11, 2018, and plan to attend!
