meeting.

Orthodontic Assistant Competency Assessment.

The Washington State Dental Quality Assurance
Commission (DQAC) modified the rule regarding
supportive services that may be performed
by registered dental assistants and expanded
function dental auxiliaries (EFDAs). The WSSO
provided relevant feedback to DQAC while implementing these changes. The WSSO board organized a taskforce to write a training manual for
EFDAs on the topic of using high-speed instruments to remove orthodontic cement. The new
rule for EFDAs took effect in early 2017. WSSO will
hold a training workshop at its 2018 Annual
Meeting to help members with these changes.

WSSO would like to report on the progress of the
nationwide anterior open bite study led by Dr.
Greg Huang, a member and chair, University of
Washington (UW) Department of Orthodontics.
Dr. Huang would like to thank the WSSO orthodontists who are participating. The study has
recruited 350 patients from 92 practitioners
across the country. About one-third of the
patients have completed treatment, and several
papers are in progress reporting on the enrollment phase. Additional papers on treatment success and stability are also planned.

The WSSO is geared up for its Annual Meeting,
which will be held on Friday, February 2, 2018, at
the Meydenbauer Convention Center in Bellevue.

Dr. Park Selected for Fellowship
in the American College of Dentists
Jae Hyun Park, DMD, MSD, MS, PhD, Professor and
Chair, Postgraduate Orthodontic Program at A.T.
Still University's Arizona School of Dentistry &
Oral Health, was selected for Fellowship in the
American College of Dentists (ACD) at its 2017
Annual Meeting and Convocation, held in
Atlanta, GA, on October 18-19.
Founded in 1920, the ACD is the oldest major
honorary organization for dentists. It is com-

prised of dentists who have exemplified excellence through their outstanding leadership and
exceptional contributions to dentistry and society.
Membership is by invitation only. Currently, about
3.5% of all dentists are Fellows of the ACD. 
